GDV (Gastric Dilation and Volvulus)

The stomach is black and appears distended and twisted demonstrating the classic reverse "C" sign on X-ray.   This patient required emergency surgery to relieve the air distension and reverse the twist of the stomach that sometimes pulls the spleen with it.  A gastropexy (suturing the stomach wall to the inside of the abdominal wall to prevent future episodes was performed.  Great Danes, Standard Poodles, and other large breed dogs are most susceptible.

Feline Megacolon: Constipation/Obstipation

Obstipation is a severe form of constipation resulting in distension of the colon (The white arrow indicates the megacolon).  There are many possible causes including an inability of the colon to have normal movement (motility abnormality).  This cat required multiple enemas and continued medical therapy.  Some patients require a surgical alternative.  The two structures above the colon marked with a white star are the kidneys.
